Colossal Biosciences has introduced GenoMorph, an AI platform designed to accelerate de-extinction efforts. The system utilizes 3D morphology, comparative genomics, and developmental biology to identify specific genes for editing when genomic data is limited.

The company is currently applying the platform to its dodo bird project, where it has access to only one dodo genome. To train GenoMorph, the team analyzed developmental data from chickens, quail, ducks, and pigeons, alongside genetic and 3D skull measurements from over 70 bird species.

The platform has already identified approximately 2,300 potential DNA editing targets for dodo cranial facial morphology. Additionally, Colossal has developed a system using lipid nanoparticles to deliver gene-editing tools directly into bird embryos to test these changes.

The company reported that its Nicobar pigeon colony has grown to 36 birds, and it has successfully generated essential egg and sperm cells. These cells are considered vital for the strategy to produce birds that carry dodo traits.

Peter Diamandis, an investor in Colossal, has launched a new venture capital firm called NeoGenesis Capital. The firm aims to support companies that utilize Colossal Biosciences' programmable biology platform across sectors including health, agriculture, and conservation.
