Coinbase will rename its Base App back to Coinbase Wallet on September 8. The decision marks a strategic shift away from the previous focus on social networking and creator monetization toward a multichain trading platform. According to product head Ryan Kass, the wallet will function as a test kitchen for new trading experiences before they potentially reach the main Coinbase exchange.
The platform now supports perpetual futures on Hyperliquid, tokenized stocks, and various crypto networks including Solana. This expansion aims to fulfill user demand for trading diverse assets across different blockchains. Despite the rebrand, Coinbase maintains its support for the Base network, noting that the company expects cyclical interest between Base and competing ecosystems like Robinhood Chain.
The original Base App was introduced in July 2025 in Los Angeles as an all-in-one platform featuring messaging and AI tools. Following lower-than-expected adoption of these social features, creator Jesse Pollak shifted his focus back to the development of the Base blockchain. The return to the original name is intended to align the product with the company's broader everything exchange strategy.
