Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong is implementing a management strategy where internal platforms compete for usage, similar to external products. AI agents act as evaluators, routing tasks to the most efficient tools and identifying underperforming services for replacement.

The company currently utilizes approximately 1,200 full-time AI agents integrated into its workflows. These agents perform tasks such as code reviews, design input, and strategic evaluation, functioning similarly to human colleagues.

Coinbase reported a 2x year-over-year increase in code output per developer, accompanied by a reduction in reported bugs. Armstrong predicts that the number of AI agents within the company may eventually exceed the number of human employees.

Earlier this year, the company began testing AI agents modeled after former executives to assist in strategic discussions. This initiative is part of a broader restructuring strategy intended to increase operational speed and efficiency.
