Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince argues that AI agents are disrupting the ad-funded web model as they scrape content without viewing advertisements. To address this, the company proposes a system where AI agents automatically pay for the content they access.
Cloudflare, in partnership with Coinbase, has introduced the x402 protocol, which utilizes the HTTP 402 Payment Required status code for automated micropayments. The system relies on stablecoins to ensure near-instant settlement with minimal fees, which legacy financial infrastructure cannot support for sub-cent transactions.
The Monetization Gateway, which integrates the x402 protocol, launched in beta on September 30, 2026. Cloudflare processes approximately 500 million requests per second, and Prince estimates that 1% to 10% of this traffic could be monetizable, requiring a capacity of 5 million to 50 million transactions per second.
While the current target is 10 million transactions per second, Prince anticipates a future need for up to 100 million transactions per second. The success of this model depends on the adoption of the protocol by publishers and AI companies, as well as the ability of blockchain infrastructure to scale to these volumes.
