Chinese companies listed on domestic exchanges reported a 25.7% year-on-year profit increase in Q2 2026, marking the highest growth in five years. Despite these results, the CSI 300 Index fell by approximately 9%, while the Star 50 Index dropped by 29%.

The IT sector saw profits surge by 142% due to AI commercialization, while electronics companies reported a 97% increase. Goldman Sachs estimated total corporate profit growth at 24%. Additionally, the AI-focused firm SenseTime became profitable during the quarter.

Industrial enterprise profits for the first half of 2026 reached approximately ¥4 trillion, an 18.7% increase. However, domestic consumption remains weak, and the real estate sector continues to impact consumer confidence, putting pressure on internet companies.

Investors are concerned that high capital expenditures in data centers and chip production may compress margins. The 29% decline in the Star 50 Index follows a previous 76% surge, as the market adjusts to the current pace of AI-related spending.
