Retail sales of passenger new energy vehicles in China reached 362,000 units during the first 13 days of September 2026. This figure represents a 16% increase compared to the previous month, though it marks a 10% decline year-on-year. The market penetration for NEVs reached 70.3% during this period, driven by a persistent slump in gasoline vehicle sales.
Wholesale data for the same period shows 411,000 units sold, reflecting a 1% year-on-year growth and a 26% rise from the previous month. Year-to-date wholesale figures for NEVs have hit 10.19 million units, a 9% increase over the previous year. Wholesale penetration for NEVs currently stands at 74.7%, supported by strong export performance.
Total retail sales for all passenger vehicles in China amounted to 515,000 units in early September, down 23% year-on-year. Year-to-date retail sales for the broader passenger vehicle market reached 12.23 million units, a 21% decrease compared to the same period last year. Daily sales averages fluctuated between 35,050 and 43,515 units across the first two weeks.
The China Passenger Car Association notes that manufacturers are prioritizing volume to maintain production levels despite a lack of strong-selling models. High fuel prices continue to impact the gasoline vehicle segment, with cumulative price increases exceeding ¥830 per metric ton since late July. Automakers are currently focusing on direct retail sales to sustain market presence.
