In the first half of 2026, the industry released 367,000 micro-dramas, with AI-generated content accounting for over 74%. On average, more than 1,500 new AI dramas entered the market daily. This surge was driven by a significant drop in production costs, which fell from hundreds of thousands of yuan to just a few thousand yuan, while production time was reduced from months to a few weeks.

Starting September 1, China implemented the Administrative Measures for the Development of Micro-Dramas. The regulation applies to all micro-dramas with episodes shorter than 20 minutes and requires AI-generated content to carry prominent disclosure labels. Additionally, streaming platforms are now prohibited from using recommendation algorithms that encourage user addiction or excessive consumption.

To combat low-quality content, major platforms like ByteDance's Hongguo Short Drama are developing full-stack AI production systems. These systems utilize fine-tuned large language models and billions of user behavior signals to optimize script pacing. New technologies are also being introduced to ensure character consistency across episodes and to pre-screen for visual defects or infringing materials.

The industry is also expanding globally. From January to July 2026, TikTok short dramas generated over $110 million in cumulative revenue-sharing payouts, with July alone exceeding $29 million. China's AI production technologies and storytelling formulas are now being exported to international markets.
