China Life Insurance, the largest life insurer in China, is directing billions of yuan into funds focused on artificial intelligence and semiconductor development. This strategy aligns with national efforts to achieve technological self-reliance amid tightening international export controls on advanced chip equipment.
In January 2026, the company committed RMB 4 billion to a partnership totaling RMB 5.0515 billion. Managed by China Life Capital, this vehicle mandates that at least 70% of its capital be directed toward AI applications, specifically targeting autonomous driving and embodied intelligence.
In July 2026, the insurer pledged nearly RMB 5 billion to an eight-year semiconductor equity fund. This partnership focuses on companies specializing in chip design and related services. Across these investments, China Life acquires minority stakes rather than seeking operational control.
By the end of 2025, the insurer’s total investments in tech self-reliance projects exceeded RMB 510 billion. This includes an RMB 11.8 billion stake in a Shanghai integrated circuit fund established in 2023. The company is shifting capital from traditional assets like real estate toward these growth sectors.
Financial results for August 2026 show China Life reported revenue of RMB 434.3 billion, marking an 81.5% year-on-year increase. Net profit rose by 228% to RMB 134.5 billion, providing the company with significant long-duration capital to support these strategic national technology initiatives.
