A Chery Omoda 5 experienced a complete rear axle detachment in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, on October 6. The incident involved a black vehicle with registration JWL 2862, which was found with its rear suspension assembly, including the torsion beam and wheels, separated from the chassis.

This event follows a similar case from April 28, 2024, which led to a safety campaign by Chery Auto Malaysia covering 600 vehicles. The company previously identified the root cause as an equipment calibration failure at a supplier, resulting in incomplete weld penetration on rear axle beams produced between August 14 and 17, 2023.

Chery reported in May 2024 that 60 vehicles were fitted with the affected components. The recall specifically targeted the Omoda 5 model with torsion-beam rear suspension, which is assembled locally by Inokom Corporation using CKD kits. The electric Omoda E5 uses a different suspension architecture.

It remains unconfirmed whether the vehicle involved in the October incident was part of the previous inspection campaign or if it was produced within the affected timeframe. Chery Auto Malaysia has not yet released a formal technical report or verified the production date of the specific unit.
