Chatballs is an open-source AI platform designed for first-line customer support, distributed under the AGPL-3.0 license. The system is self-hosted and does not require a mandatory CRM or external cloud accounts to function.
The platform processes inquiries from Telegram, email, web widgets, and MAX. AI agents are configured with specific instructions and knowledge bases, which use semantic retrieval via PostgreSQL and pgvector. If an AI agent cannot resolve a query, the conversation is transferred to a human operator.
Operators manage all communication channels through a unified interface. The system supports voice messages, transcription, and audio or video calls. For network connectivity during calls, the platform includes Coturn within its Docker Compose configuration.
Chatballs allows for multi-organization management within a single installation. Data security features include encrypted storage for API keys and secrets, as well as basic PII redaction before sending data to external LLMs. Files can be stored locally or in S3-compatible storage.
The backend is built on Django and is designed to run on a single server for small to medium-sized deployments. Users can choose their own AI providers and models, ensuring the system remains functional even if specific service pricing or terms change.
