Capcom has officially announced the REX project, an initiative designed to upgrade its proprietary RE Engine for the AI era. The company aims to integrate artificial intelligence into its development workflow to streamline processes and address the increasing complexity of modern AAA game production.
During the Capcom Open Conference RE:2026 held on October 2, 2026, executive and programmer Satoshi Ishida outlined the strategy. Instead of building a new engine from scratch, the company will evolve the existing RE Engine through the phased REX program.
The REX project focuses on unifying the engine using a globally standardized programming language. This approach is intended to make the codebase more accessible to developers and easier for AI systems to interpret, write, and debug.
Capcom plans to leverage AI to automate repetitive tasks, conduct game testing, and identify software vulnerabilities. These improvements are expected to help manage the growing scale of development teams and reduce the time required for routine production stages.
