Canonical has transitioned to a new two-week release cycle for unified Ubuntu security patches. The company updated its workflow to address the increasing volume of vulnerability reports generated by artificial intelligence tools.
Developers previously followed a schedule featuring regular updates every four weeks and separate security patches every two weeks. The surge in CVE reports, driven by AI agents and large language models, necessitated this shift to a consolidated bi-weekly update cadence.
The Linux kernel development community has also experienced this trend, with CVEs now being registered in the thousands. Linus Torvalds noted an increase in bug reports during the release candidate phases for Linux 7.0 and 7.1, though these issues were not critical.
