Developer Calle has released BitNotes, an open-source, multi-mint wallet for the Cashu ecash protocol. The application allows users to convert digital Bitcoin-backed ecash tokens into physical paper notes. These notes feature tamper-evident designs and can be verified offline by checking the cryptographic signature of the issuing mint using public keys.
The wallet integrates with the Lightning Network for digital transfers and utilizes the Ark protocol for on-chain Bitcoin transactions. Additionally, BitNotes includes a bridge for Mobile Money systems, specifically supporting Rwandan Francs. The multi-mint architecture enables users to route transactions through various independent entities, such as 28MINT, to distribute risk and automate swaps.
Currently, the application is available for Android and macOS, with its source code released under MIT and Apache licenses. Development of the underlying Cashu protocol has been ongoing since October 2022. As of the launch, there have been no public security audits, and the project remains in an early stage of development.
