California Governor Gavin Newsom signed SB 947, known as the No Robo Bosses Act, on September 30. This legislation prohibits employers from relying exclusively on artificial intelligence for disciplinary actions or termination. Managers must support AI-driven decisions with additional evidence, such as performance reviews, starting July 1, 2027.
The state also enacted AB 1979, which restricts the use of AI in healthcare settings. The law ensures that licensed professionals retain final decision-making authority, limiting AI to an advisory role. Additionally, SB 503 mandates that developers of diagnostic and treatment AI tools implement measures to reduce algorithmic bias.
Furthermore, AB 1159 prohibits EdTech companies from utilizing student data to train generative AI models. This measure, which also takes effect on July 1, 2027, protects approximately 2.9 million college students in California. The law restricts the collection of sensitive information, including immigration status, and grants students the right to sue for violations.
