On September 30, 2026, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a legislative package regulating the use of artificial intelligence in workplace management, monitoring, and termination processes.
The No Robo Bosses Act (SB 947) mandates human review for disciplinary actions or terminations primarily driven by automated decision systems. Employers must also provide written notices regarding data rights, with these provisions taking effect on July 1, 2027.
Bill SB 951 amends the state's Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, requiring companies to disclose if job losses are caused in substantial part by AI technologies, including specific roles affected.
The AB 1883 measure prohibits the use of AI tools designed to infer emotional states or collect neural data from employees. Enforcement of this specific ban begins on January 1, 2027.
These new regulations follow previous legislative efforts, including the 2025 updates to the Fair Employment and Housing Act regarding algorithmic discrimination in hiring, and the veto of the broader SB 7 bill in October 2025.
