California Governor Gavin Newsom signed two artificial intelligence safety bills on September 9. These legislative acts represent the first instance of such regulations being implemented within the United States.
The first bill establishes a framework for an independent state-level compliance assessment agency for AI systems and models. This initiative aims to create a standardized approach to evaluating the safety and reliability of complex technologies.
The second bill introduces a registration system for state-level AI auditors. It mandates the development of independent, transparent, and integrity-based standards for these professionals to ensure rigorous oversight of AI development and deployment.
Together, these measures create a comprehensive third-party evaluation and audit framework. The state government intends to use these tools to enhance transparency and accountability in the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence sector.
Governor Newsom emphasized that while AI holds significant potential, its deployment requires effective safety measures to protect the public. He also called for the federal government to establish national regulations to address the current technological landscape.
