ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, has secured a loan facility totaling $29.6 billion. The deal involved nearly 30 Chinese and international banking institutions. The company initially targeted $20 billion, but strong demand from lenders allowed for an increase in the final amount.
The credit facility is structured for a three-year term with an option to extend it by two additional years. While the company officially stated the funds are for general corporate purposes, sources indicate the capital will primarily support artificial intelligence projects outside of China, including data center expansion in Southeast Asia.
The financing arrives as ByteDance navigates a complex regulatory environment. In July, the company removed customizable agents from its Doubao service to comply with new restrictions on humanlike AI. Furthermore, potential government limits on overseas access to domestic AI models could impact the company's international development strategy.
