ByteDance has secured a loan of $29.6 billion to accelerate its artificial intelligence initiatives. The company initially aimed to raise $20 billion, but increased the target due to significant interest from lenders. This transaction marks the second-largest loan in Asia for the current year, trailing only the $40 billion raised by SoftBank in March.

The credit facility is notable for being unsecured, meaning ByteDance provided no collateral to the participating banks. Sources indicate that lenders are relying primarily on the company's creditworthiness and reputation. This level of unsecured funding is considered rare for a loan of such magnitude.

The capital is earmarked for projects outside of China, specifically to purchase capacity at data centers across Southeast Asia. ByteDance intends to utilize these resources to compete with both local and global hyperscalers in the development of multimodal AI models and infrastructure.

Separately, research from PYMNTS Intelligence highlights consumer preferences for AI in retail. Data shows that 42% of users prefer AI integrated into search engines, while 34.6% favor standalone platforms and 23.4% opt for merchant assistants. Power users, however, show a distinct preference for standalone platforms.
