ByteDance is accelerating the development of its personal AI agent project, codenamed Spell. The initiative began in April and serves as a continuation of the company's work on the Doubao mobile assistant. The project is currently led by the Doubao team, with plans to integrate Spell into existing products for a near-term release.
Tencent has also entered the space, launching a personal AI agent called LightVela in late September. The tool is described as a cloud-based assistant accessible via WeChat, designed to handle daily user tasks. Currently, LightVela is in the developer experience phase.
These developments follow the release of Meta's Muse on September 8. Muse is designed to perform tasks such as sending emails and booking travel by accessing user data across calendars, payments, and smart home devices. Users maintain control over data access permissions.
Unlike traditional chatbots, Muse is positioned as an action-oriented agent. Mark Zuckerberg has identified this technology as a critical step toward achieving personal superintelligence by automating cross-platform tasks.
