BYD has filed a patent for a new battery cabinet design featuring an immersion cooling system. The architecture uses a two-chamber enclosure that separates electrical components from the battery modules, which are submerged in a dielectric fluid.

The patent, published by the China National Intellectual Property Administration on October 5, 2026, as CN 122868832 A, was filed in March 2025. It covers battery cabinets and energy storage equipment rather than passenger vehicles.

The design addresses the challenge of maintaining electrical connections between the dry and wet compartments. Connections are routed through the upper section of the liquid chamber to minimize exposure to hydrostatic pressure.

Unlike current systems from BYD and CATL that use indirect cooling via cold plates, this method allows direct heat transfer from the modules to the fluid. The patent specifies the use of hydrocarbon or ester-based dielectric fluids.

The application is currently under substantive examination. BYD has not announced any plans for commercial production of this specific battery enclosure architecture.
