BYD has launched its third Southeast Asian plant in the Subang Smartpolitan Industrial Park, West Java, Indonesia. The 126-hectare facility is designed for an annual production capacity of 150,000 units and includes stamping, welding, painting, and assembly processes.

The first vehicle produced at the site is the M6 DM plug-in hybrid MPV, which has an EV range of 110 kilometers according to NEDC. The plant also manufactures the Atto 1, which was Indonesia's best-selling electric car in 2025 with 22,582 units registered.

Later this year, BYD will begin local production of the M6 EV and the D9. For the Indonesian market, the D9 will be available only as a purely electric variant. To comply with local production requirements, the company has stopped importing vehicles and will not localize other models like the Dolphin, Atto 3, Seal, and Sealion 7.

The company utilized a government scheme from February 2024 to December 2025 that exempted imported EVs from import duty and luxury goods sales tax. Having imported 92,000 units under a 100,000-unit quota, BYD must offset this volume through local production by December 31, 2027.

BYD currently operates over 100 sales outlets in Indonesia and plans to expand this network to over 200 by next year. Additionally, the company is researching the potential introduction of the electric kei car Racco to the local market.
