Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has introduced EIP-8288, a proposal aimed at reducing the cost of quantum-safe private transactions by over 99%. The plan seeks to move complex cryptographic verification off the network's execution path to significantly lower gas consumption.

Currently, quantum-safe private transactions require approximately 10 million gas, while standard private transactions cost about 300,000 gas. Under the proposed EIP-8288, both types of transactions would cost only a few tens of thousands of gas, making them substantially more efficient.

The mechanism functions by replacing on-chain cryptography with a 96-byte dependency claim. Mempool nodes would then aggregate these claims and generate a single recursive STARK proof per block. This approach relies on the RISC-V instruction set as a common language for these recursive proofs.

Buterin co-authored the proposal with Thomas Coratger in June. The plan builds upon the Frames transaction overhaul introduced earlier. Buterin aims to include both initiatives in the I-star network upgrade, which is scheduled to follow the Hegota fork.
