The author decided to upgrade the KDE desktop environment on a laptop running RED OS 8 to resolve issues with fractional scaling on a 14-inch Full HD display. While KDE Plasma 5 under X11 offered some scaling options, the user aimed for a native Wayland experience, which was previously limited in older versions of the environment.
Rather than switching to a distribution with KDE 6 pre-installed, such as Fedora or Alt Linux, the author chose to build the environment manually. The process involved compiling nearly 500 source packages and creating a custom RPM repository to support the new desktop shell.
The project required setting up multiple virtual machines for testing and utilized LLM tools to navigate the complexities of the build process. This undertaking provided the author with practical insight into the challenges faced by Linux distribution maintainers when managing software dependencies and system integration.
