Broadcom CEO Hock Tan stated at the DBS Asia Future Forward Conference on October 12, 2026, that many AI investors resemble casino gamblers. He also compared corporate spending on AI to children spending tokens at an arcade. Tan expressed skepticism regarding the long-term viability of AI labs that currently operate at a loss.
Following these remarks, the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) declined by approximately 3%, while Broadcom shares fell by about 2%. Aoifinn Devitt of Moneta disagreed with the comparison, characterizing the current market correction as a natural process and arguing that the casino analogy overstates the risks involved.
Broadcom reported $16.7 billion in AI semiconductor revenue for fiscal Q3, representing a 221% increase year-over-year. The company forecasts $21.7 billion in AI revenue for Q4 and $58 billion for fiscal 2026. By fiscal 2028, Broadcom anticipates its annual AI chip revenue could reach $230 billion.
Tan identified access to capital as a potential primary constraint on the growth of AI infrastructure, surpassing concerns regarding chip supply or electricity. He noted that OpenAI achieved an annualized revenue run rate of approximately $50 billion as of September 2026.
