Breakthrough Energy has unveiled its sixth cohort of fellows, supporting 21 early-stage startups focused on energy transition and climate adaptation. The program aims to address a projected threefold increase in global electricity demand as economies move toward full electrification.

The new cohort includes companies developing proton-boron fusion technology, such as Borealis Fusion and StarWarden. Other participants, including Bedrock Semiconductor, K1 Semiconductor, and Vari Flux, are focused on improving semiconductor efficiency and reducing data center power consumption.

The investment group is also backing startups like AmyHyTech and Ammovolt Energy, which are exploring hydrogen transport via ammonia. Additionally, the portfolio includes ventures working on molecular sensing for agriculture and robotics for deep-sea mineral harvesting.

The program is currently led by acting director Benjamin Gaddy following the departure of Ashley Grosh. Despite leadership changes, the organization maintains its strategy of funding high-risk, high-reward technologies to support long-term decarbonization and climate adaptation efforts.
