Starting in October 2026, BMW will integrate navigation routes, environmental data, and driver assistance information into a single 3D view on the central display. This interface aims to clarify vehicle decision-making processes by showing how the car perceives its surroundings and which assistance features are active.
The system was developed in-house by BMW, utilizing map and navigation data provided by Mapbox. It is designed to accurately position the vehicle within lanes and road levels, which is particularly useful for navigating complex intersections, multi-lane urban roads, and highway interchanges.
The update will work in conjunction with the BMW Highway Assistant 2. This system supports acceleration, braking, and steering at speeds up to 130 kilometers per hour on approved highways. It can manage travel from ramp to exit and perform lane changes after the driver confirms the maneuver with a brief glance.
BMW emphasizes that these features do not upgrade the vehicle's autonomous driving capabilities. Drivers must remain attentive and supervise the system at all times. The update is limited to vehicles running BMW Operating System X that are equipped with Highway Assistant or Highway & City Assistant packages.
