BMW is preparing a second-generation iX1, shifting the entry-level electric SUV to the dedicated Neue Klasse platform. A camouflaged prototype was recently spotted testing at the Nürburgring, revealing a minimalist front design that moves away from the traditional oversized kidney grille.
The upcoming model will feature the Neue Klasse interior architecture, which includes a 17.9-inch central touchscreen, a redesigned steering wheel, and the Panoramic Vision 3D Head-Up Display. This transition marks a departure from the current design, which is derived from internal combustion engine vehicles.
The iX1 is part of a broader strategy that includes 40 new or refreshed models scheduled for release through 2027. Additionally, BMW announced plans during its Capital Market Day on September 29 to introduce a fully electric entry-level sedan, expected to be named the i1, in 2028.
While the current 2026 iX1 eDrive20 and xDrive30 models offer WLTP ranges of up to 512 km and 417 km respectively, the new platform aims to deliver further improvements in efficiency and charging speeds. BMW currently has no plans to offer the iX1 in the US market.
