BMW has commenced road testing for its iX5 Hydrogen prototype as part of development efforts targeting a market launch by the end of the 2020s. The company aims for the vehicle to achieve a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of under 5 seconds, matching the performance of the electric iX5 model. The car features an xDrive all-wheel-drive system with electric motors on both axles.
The vehicle is designed to achieve a WLTP range of 750 km on a single hydrogen fill. It utilizes seven high-pressure carbon fiber tanks with a total capacity of 7 kg of hydrogen. Refueling is expected to take less than 5 minutes, comparable to the time required for gasoline or diesel X5 models. The interior space remains unaffected by the hydrogen storage system.
The iX5 Hydrogen incorporates a third-generation fuel cell system developed in partnership with Toyota, which is 25% smaller than its predecessor. Engineers are currently testing the prototype under various conditions to ensure the fuel cell and drive motors function as intended. BMW aims to maintain its signature driving dynamics in this new powertrain variant.
As the fifth powertrain option for the X5 series, the hydrogen model is expected to reach the market no earlier than 2028. BMW plans to limit its availability rather than offering it globally. The company views the hydrogen-powered vehicle as a zero-emission alternative that offers long range and rapid refueling capabilities to attract consumers.
