South Korean cryptocurrency exchange Bithumb has reported a security breach affecting its internal mobile system. The platform, which employees utilize for internal communication and information sharing, was compromised earlier this week. The company discovered the unauthorized access on Tuesday and promptly notified the Korea Internet & Security Agency and the Personal Information Protection Commission.
Bithumb is currently conducting an investigation to determine the full extent of the incident, specifically whether any user data was exposed. The exchange emphasized that its internal work system is isolated from the virtual asset trading platform. Consequently, the company stated that customer virtual assets remain secure and could not be accessed through this specific breach.
This incident occurs amidst a broader trend of cyberattacks targeting the South Korean financial sector. According to the Financial Supervisory Authority, 16 financial firms in the country had reported cyberattacks by October 14. Other recent victims include Mirae Asset Global Investments and Daishin Securities, the latter of which confirmed that personal and credit data of 38 490 customers were leaked.
