BitGo CEO Mike Belshe warned that vertically integrated crypto firms could trigger a market collapse similar to the 2008 failure of Lehman Brothers. Speaking at Korea Blockchain Week on October 2, 2026, Belshe argued that exchanges, brokerages, and custodians should operate as separate businesses.
Belshe cited Coinbase as an example of a company holding multiple licenses to perform integrated operations. He noted that while such structures are legal under current frameworks, they lack the separation rules found in traditional financial markets, creating significant counterparty credit risks.
The warning follows the stalling of the Clarity Act in the US Senate on September 15, 2026, after it failed to secure 60 votes. The absence of this legislation leaves the industry without structural guardrails, allowing firms to continue building integrated platforms.
Belshe emphasized that in the current model, users holding assets on platforms that also trade or lend are exposed to the firm's overall financial health. He suggested that investors should verify who holds their private keys and how the entity manages its balance sheet.
