BeInCrypto Research released its new report, The State of AI Agent Payments 2026, during the TOKEN2049 conference in Singapore. The study analyzes on-chain data to evaluate the current adoption of autonomous AI payment systems, moving beyond market hype to examine actual business utility.
Data from a 35-day sample on Base and Solana revealed 6.4 million x402 transactions totaling $119,947. Notably, 90.8% of these transactions were valued at less than one cent. Solana processed 94.5% of the observed volume, with a significant portion of activity concentrated within an eight-day window.
The research highlights that AI agents currently operate under strict human-defined constraints. Out of 19 reviewed products, 14 function within pre-set limits, and none set their own goals. Furthermore, AI-labeled applications accounted for only 0.55% of the $653.08 million trading volume across four Hyperliquid connections.
Security remains a concern, as the report documented two incidents where AI-linked wallets lost a combined $281,200 to attackers. Despite these risks, capital continues to flow into the sector, with 36 funding rounds and acquisitions totaling $4.25 billion, 92% of which targeted payment and cash-management infrastructure.
