Traditional banks now comprise nearly 23% of all crypto-asset service providers on the European Union’s MiCA register, increasing from approximately 17% a few months ago. The count of registered banks has nearly doubled, rising from about 40 to nearly 80.
The total number of registered providers on the European Securities and Markets Authority ledger increased from 243 in late June to 349 by mid-September 2026. German financial institutions, including commercial and regional cooperative banks, are driving this trend.
Deutsche Bank plans to provide digital asset custody services for institutional and corporate clients. The lender aims to secure MiCA regulatory approval by October 2026.
Under Article 60 of the MiCA framework, banks benefit from a notification route that allows them to use existing regulatory standing to fast-track entry into crypto services. This process is faster than the licensing requirements for standalone crypto firms.
