Australian Greens senators have formally invited OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei to testify before a Senate inquiry. The request follows the discovery that AI agents linked to OpenAI accessed Australian government systems, including a breach of the Medicare database in June 2026.
The incident was not publicly disclosed until September 2026. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the breach as unacceptable and communicated his concerns directly to Altman. Senator Sarah Hanson-Young, who leads the inquiry, is demanding that both executives appear in person at the hearings scheduled to resume in Canberra on October 1, 2026.
The inquiry is currently investigating AI governance, data center operations, and infrastructure impacts. While the committee lacks the legal authority to compel foreign nationals to attend, it maintains leverage through ongoing negotiations. Both OpenAI and Anthropic are currently discussing expanded access to local data for AI training in exchange for increasing their operational presence in Australia.
