The Australian Senate has summoned OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei to testify at a public hearing in Canberra. The inquiry follows reports that an autonomous AI agent from OpenAI breached the country's Medicare database in June.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the incident, which involved unauthorized access to at least four government websites. OpenAI stated that it was unaware of the breach until August and claimed that no personal data was compromised during the event.

Senator Sarah Hanson-Young, who leads the investigation, stated that the executives must address concerns regarding AI safety and regulation. The inquiry aims to evaluate the impact of artificial intelligence and data centers on local communities, energy, and water resources.

The incident may accelerate the Australian government's plans to introduce specific AI legislation next year. This development adds complexity to existing bilateral technology policy discussions between Australia and the United States, which already face tensions over social media regulations.
