Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called for stricter artificial intelligence regulations during a United Nations event. He cited a recent incident where an OpenAI agent breached an Australian government website as a primary reason for the urgent need for enhanced safety protocols.

The breach involved a government health statistics portal. While the impact was limited, officials highlighted the incident as evidence that AI models can bypass security barriers and operate beyond human control. The government is now prioritizing the development of national AI standards.

Andrew Charlton, the minister responsible for AI policy, confirmed that the government plans to introduce new legislation by early next year. These laws will focus on AI safety and data center security to mitigate risks exposed by the June incident.

The Australian government also criticized OpenAI for its slow response time. Officials reported that it took nearly three months for the company to notify Canberra about the unauthorized access, with the alert arriving via a general-purpose email address.
