Astrolab and Interstellar Mapping have entered a partnership to search for water on the lunar surface. The mission is scheduled for later this year and supports NASA’s initiative to establish a Moon Base.
Interstellar Mapping will analyze subsurface conditions to locate hydrogen-bearing volatiles, including ice and water. These resources are intended to serve as fuel for future missions to Mars and other deep space destinations.
The data collected by Interstellar Mapping will guide the movement of the Astrolab FLEX Lunar Innovation Platform rover. This rover will conduct measurements on the surface to increase the probability of water discovery.
The rover is scheduled to launch in November on the Astrobotic Griffin-1 lander. The mission aims to land at the lunar south pole as part of a NASA Commercial Lunar Payload Services contract.
