AstraZeneca has entered into a strategic partnership with the biotechnology firm insitro to leverage artificial intelligence for drug discovery. The collaboration focuses on developing treatments for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) and various cardiomyopathies.
Under the terms of the agreement, insitro will receive an upfront payment of $40 million. The company is also eligible for additional milestone payments totaling approximately $1.46 billion, contingent upon the successful discovery, development, and commercialization of new therapeutics.
The partnership utilizes insitro's machine learning capabilities to identify causal disease biology and select drug targets. Once candidates are identified, AstraZeneca will assume responsibility for clinical development, regulatory processes, and the final commercialization of the resulting medicines.
In addition to milestone payments, insitro will be entitled to tiered royalties based on future sales of developed drugs. This agreement aims to address the biological heterogeneity of MASH and cardiomyopathies by using data-driven insights to accelerate the research process.
