ASML, the world's leading supplier of lithography equipment, reported zero revenue from the European market in the first half of 2026. This marks a significant decline from previous years, as the region accounted for 5% of the company's total revenue in 2024 and 1% in 2025.
Frank Heemskerk, executive vice president at ASML, stated that the lack of sales is due to insufficient investment in semiconductor manufacturing within Europe. The region is seeing very few new large-scale fabrication plants being built, while some existing facilities have faced closure, such as the Coherent plant in the UK.
Despite the stagnation in Europe, ASML remains the most valuable European company by market capitalization, currently valued at approximately $660 billion. The company maintains its dominant global position by supplying EUV lithography systems primarily to clients in Taiwan, South Korea, and the United States.
ASML is currently in discussions with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to address the issue. The company is urging EU authorities to stimulate local demand for semiconductors, arguing that creating a market for chips is essential to encourage the construction of new production facilities.
