On October 23, 2026, Federal Judge Marcelo Martínez de Giorgi dismissed the criminal case against Argentine President Javier Milei, his sister Karina Milei, and nine other individuals. The investigation concerned the promotion of the LIBRA memecoin.
The legal proceedings originated from a social media post published by Javier Milei on February 14, 2025, which promoted the token. Following the post, the asset experienced a surge in value before crashing, resulting in reported investor losses of $251 million.
Judge Martínez de Giorgi rejected fraud charges, citing a lack of evidence regarding deception. The court noted that the price volatility of the token was characteristic of memecoins and classified the president's promotion of the asset as a personal action rather than an official government endorsement.
The dismissal follows a recommendation from prosecutor Eduardo Taiano, who found insufficient evidence of criminal activity. Previously, the Argentine anti-corruption office cleared the president of wrongdoing, and a related US class-action lawsuit was also dismissed.
