The Aptos blockchain has implemented proposal AIP-140, introducing significant changes to its tokenomics. The update establishes a hard supply cap of 2.1 billion APT tokens. Previously, the network had no limit on the total token supply.

The protocol has reduced annual staking rewards from 5.19% to 2.6%. Additionally, transaction gas fees have increased by a factor of ten. The network now permanently burns 100% of all collected gas fees to reduce the circulating supply.

As of mid-September 2026, the network had burned approximately 1.8 million APT since its mainnet launch in October 2022. The current circulating supply is roughly 1.196 billion APT, leaving 904 million tokens available for future issuance.

The Aptos Foundation has locked and staked 210 million APT, representing about 18% of the circulating supply at the time of the proposal. Any future increase to the 2.1 billion token cap will require community governance approval.
