Aptos Foundation is locking 210 million APT tokens, representing approximately 18% of the circulating supply and 37% of the original mainnet allocation. The organization will stake these assets indefinitely, using the generated rewards to fund operations instead of selling tokens from its treasury.
The initiative is part of a broader tokenomics overhaul approved through governance. The plan introduces a hard supply cap of 2.1 billion APT tokens. Additionally, annual staking rewards will decrease from approximately 5.19% to 2.6%, and gas fees will increase tenfold, with all fees being permanently burned.
These changes are scheduled for implementation by September 2026. The timeline aligns with the conclusion of the initial four-year vesting cycle for early investors and core contributors, which ends on October 12, 2026. Following this date, the Foundation anticipates a 60% reduction in monthly token unlocks.
Since the network launch, approximately 1.9 million APT have been burned. The new strategy aims to enhance network security and long-term sustainability by shifting away from treasury sales, which previously served as the primary source of operating capital.
