The repo market, which handles trillions of dollars in daily volume, relies on dealers to connect fragmented liquidity pools. This model suggests that the next stage of digital finance will be the creation of an orchestration layer to connect different digital assets.
Corporate treasurers now face the challenge of efficiently moving liquidity between bank deposits, stablecoins, Treasury bills, and tokenized cash equivalents. While stablecoins allow for near-instant settlement, they lack the mature infrastructure needed to continuously reposition and invest balances.
The Federal Reserve Bank of New York recently published a framework for the overnight Treasury repo market. According to the report, transaction volumes underlying the Secured Overnight Financing Rate have increased from approximately $1 trillion in early 2022 to about $3 trillion today.
The New York Fed's Client Segments Framework divides the market into three components: cash providers like money market funds, dealers who redistribute liquidity, and leveraged institutions such as hedge funds. This hub-and-spoke system allows for liquidity and maturity transformation across dollar funding markets.
Potential candidates for the dealer role in digital finance include banks, custodians, stablecoin issuers, exchanges, and tokenization platforms. Their primary opportunity lies in providing a seamless transition between existing forms of digital money rather than issuing new assets.
