Apple has officially acknowledged a system vulnerability in the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max models. The issue causes the devices to freeze and perform an automatic soft reboot when users attempt to utilize Face ID for authentication or payment processes.
Users reported that the malfunction frequently occurs in low-light conditions, at specific angles, or when third-party applications trigger the biometric sensor. These unexpected restarts have led to data loss and interrupted payment transactions for some customers.
The company confirmed that the root cause is a memory allocation error within the depth map processing algorithm of the new operating system. Apple emphasized that the hardware modules are not defective and that the security of biometric data remains fully intact.
Apple is currently finalizing a software patch to resolve the bug. The company expects to release the emergency iOS update to all affected devices within the coming days. In the meantime, users are advised to disable Face ID for third-party apps or use passcodes.
