Anthropic has updated Claude Code to prevent abrupt task termination when users hit their 5-hour usage limit. The tool will now complete the current step before pausing, rather than cutting off mid-process.

This feature uses a small, fixed portion of the user's existing weekly quota to finalize the current action. It does not provide additional usage time or extra credits; all consumption is deducted from the standard weekly limit.

Availability depends on the subscription tier. Pro users can utilize this 'graceful stop' feature once per week. Max and Team Premium users can trigger it every time they hit the 5-hour limit, provided their weekly quota is not exhausted.

To access this, users must update to Claude Code version 2.1.277 or later and be logged into a valid subscription account. The feature is currently being rolled out in batches and is not available for API, Amazon Bedrock, or Google Cloud Vertex AI users.

On September 14, Anthropic adjusted its weekly quota policy, shifting from a temporary 50% increase to a permanent 25% increase over the original baseline. This represents a 17% reduction compared to the previous promotional period.
