In a recent S-1/A filing, Anthropic disclosed that it is increasingly utilizing AI systems to accelerate its own research and development processes. The company warned that this practice could lead to a scenario where the speed of model capability improvements outpaces the development of necessary safety, verification, and alignment protocols.

Anthropic noted that it has previously failed to detect significant jumps in model capabilities during the development phase. The company stated that it might soon reach the threshold of 'recursive self-improvement' (RSI) as defined in its Responsible Scaling Policy, which describes a state of explosive technological progress driven by AI.

Despite these warnings, the company clarified that none of its current models have crossed the threshold for recursive self-improvement. Anthropic emphasized that it does not intend to allow its Claude models to autonomously design or iterate on frontier models without effective human oversight and a full understanding of the underlying processes.

To address these concerns, Anthropic is considering revisions to its Responsible Scaling Policy. The goal is to ensure that the development of frontier models remains under human control, even as the company continues to integrate AI into its internal research workflows.
