Between January 2025 and June 2026, the share of junior technical hires at Anthropic dropped from 27% to 9%. Within technical departments specifically, the proportion of entry-level staff decreased from 21% to 14%. Despite these shifts, the company continued to expand its technical teams, though the overall share of technical staff in the total headcount fell from 61% to 56% due to faster growth in sales, finance, and HR.

The company significantly increased its reliance on AI agents. By March 2026, the total operating time of autonomous and interactive agents surpassed the combined working hours of human employees. By August 2026, interactive agents were running six times longer than their human operators. These metrics track computation and tool usage rather than the economic value or volume of completed tasks.

Anthropic reported higher output metrics, including code volume per engineer and contracts processed by the legal department. However, the company noted that increased code volume does not necessarily equate to higher quality. Employees reported that verifying AI outputs and coordinating agent workflows have become major bottlenecks, with some teams spending over half their work week reviewing Claude sessions.

The internal report, released on October 16, synthesized HR data, AI usage statistics, productivity metrics, internal communications, and 17 employee interviews. Anthropic clarified that while the company prioritizes autonomy in hiring, the findings reflect a correlation between AI adoption and organizational changes rather than a direct causal link for the reduction in junior staff.
