Anthropic is transitioning its enterprise customers to a consumption-based billing model, abandoning the previous system of bundled token allowances. Under the new structure, clients will pay a fixed fee of $20 per user per month for platform access, plus additional charges for every token consumed at standard API rates.
The company is reducing or eliminating volume-based discounts that were previously available. This shift aims to align revenue more closely with the actual costs of GPU compute required for AI inference. The new pricing policy will take effect starting in late 2025 as existing customer contracts come up for renewal.
The previous Standard and Premium enterprise tiers are no longer available for new contracts. Existing clients will be migrated to the new billing model upon their contract renewal date. This change marks a departure from the approach taken by OpenAI, which continues to offer more flexible, volume-based discount structures.
The move toward consumption-based billing is intended to provide clearer unit economics for potential public market investors as Anthropic positions itself for a possible public offering. By separating access fees from usage charges, the company aims to demonstrate more transparent revenue growth metrics.
