Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an essay titled We Must Pace the Frontier on September 12, advocating for a slower development of advanced AI capabilities. The proposal includes integrating third-party evaluators into AI labs and establishing international safety standards among democratic nations.
Despite the call for caution, Anthropic maintains its commitment to spend $517 billion on compute resources, aiming for 14.8 gigawatts of capacity by August 2026. The company projects its annual revenue run-rate to grow from $9 billion to $65 billion within seven months.
Following the publication, Nvidia shares fell by approximately 3.7% on September 14 as investors initially reacted to the rhetoric. However, the proposed safety measures do not include a reduction in hardware purchases or GPU acquisitions.
Amodei’s framework supports existing US semiconductor export controls to maintain a technological lead over China. The initiative received public support from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Elon Musk, following initial industry discussions on safety that began in June 2026.
