Anthropic has launched an experimental laboratory in the San Francisco Bay Area to focus on drug development. The facility aims to integrate the company's AI technologies with physical laboratory automation, enabling its Claude AI agent to manage robotic systems for scientific experiments with minimal human intervention.

The company is prioritizing biomedical research, specifically targeting complex diseases and the development of bispecific and trispecific antibodies. Eric Kauderer-Abrams, head of life sciences research, confirmed that the firm combines in-house laboratory work with external partnerships to validate AI-generated results through real-world experimentation.

Anthropic recently released the Claude Science system and introduced the Model Hardware Standard to facilitate AI-driven equipment control. The company has engaged with pharmaceutical firms such as Genentech, Bristol Myers Squibb, and Novo Nordisk, though it currently avoids clinical trials to maintain a non-competitive stance with traditional drug developers.

The company's expansion into biotechnology includes the acquisition of the startup Coefficient Bio, reportedly valued at $400 million in stock. Additionally, Vas Narasimhan, CEO of Novartis, has joined Anthropic's board of directors. The firm is actively recruiting specialists to scale operational processes and protein research.
