The tool allows users to adjust variables such as AI capabilities, the speed of business adoption, whether AI augments or replaces human workers, and the rate at which displaced employees find new employment.

The model is based on the Anthropic Economic Index (AEI), a research program that analyzes millions of anonymized conversations to track AI usage across different industries and geographies.

AEI data shows that directive and automated AI usage increased from 27% to 39% in early periods, primarily driven by business and API users. Task completion speeds increased by an average of 80%, while complex tasks were completed 9 to 12 times faster.

According to the model's productivity analyses, AI could increase US labor productivity growth by approximately 1% to 1.8% annually, compared to a 20-year average of around 1.4% per year.

Additional research included a survey of nearly 11,000 people, which showed a general agreement on productivity gains but divided opinions on the net effect on job creation. AEI also found that regions with higher GDP per capita exhibit higher automation adoption rates.
